Girl Dragged By JCPS School Bus Will Get $5M Settlement

Introduction

The family of a girl who was dragged by a bus in 2015 will get $5 million as a settlement from an insurance company representing Jefferson County Public Schools.

As per the lawsuit, the seven years old girl was deboarding the bus when the exit door shut on her backpack, which eventually dragged her 1000 feet. The insurance company agreed to pay $4.8 million in a series of lump-sum and periodic payments through 2088 to the family of the girl.

According to the settlement, the girl's family and their attorneys will get more than $2.7 million from the amount. MetLife Assignment Company would receive $793,792, which will finance a trust fund till March 20, 2038. BHG Structured Settlements of $1.3 million would also be allotted to the trust from April 1, 2038, until March 20, 2088.

The family's attorney said that he previously expected a jury verdict of $20 million in a similar case where a special needs child suffered disfiguring, scarring and nerve damage from the incident.
